The dribbling is also the weakest area of the game's much improved graphics/animations. Truth be told, there was nothing wrong with the old system of performing ball wizardry, so this seems like a slightly pointless feature and not as natural as the traditional analogue stick method. It makes performing the traditionally more difficult tricks much easier, but players are now limited in how many they can perform in any given game. Different tricks are assigned to different directions on the right stick, offering various step-overs, drag backs and stop turns with a simple press of a button. The dribbling has also been revamped with the all-new ability to customise feigns and tricks.

This can only be considered a good thing for a series that had grown stale and predictable in recent years.

Instead, a great deal of time and energy must be invested in order to become a pro player. The new system reduces the arcade feel of the title and makes things much more realistic (and difficult), meaning that PES 2011 is not a game that can be picked up and immediately mastered by long time fans of the series. Body shape and gaining an inch of space also play a big part in the success of shooting, and can be the difference between a shot which finds the top corner or one which finds a seat in row Z. Pressing the shot button while facing or holding the wrong direction will result in misplaced efforts that creep embarrassingly wide of goal. The same unforgiving rules also apply to the shooting. Strength is also an important factor a power bar is visible above each player's head and - much like the direction of the pass - if you don't get it right, the ball will simply bobble its way towards a teammate and probably be intercepted.

No longer will a pass zip straight to the feet of a teammate instead it's all completely dependent on the direction players press on the d-pad/analogue stick. The first thing players will notice when the whistle blows and the game kicks off is the new unforgiving passing and shooting system. Konami has made its usual claim that it has overhauled the game system for this year's release and, for once, it actually lives up to its promise by delivering a PES game that vastly improves on recent efforts.

While FIFA was evolving and improving every year, PES remained largely the same as the PS2 incarnations and did very little to take advantage of the new technology on offer. Things have steadily declined for the PES series ever since the move to the current generation of consoles. When you combine that bombshell with the glowing praise the game has received from most of the 800,000+ people who have purchased it, then Konami faces an uphill task to convert the masses back to its own football title Pro Evolution Soccer 2011. It's not been a good week for Konami after an announcement by Electronic Arts revealed that FIFA 11 has received the second biggest launch ever in the UK - making close to £30 million on all platforms in its first weekend on sale.
